Course Description

The Global Classroom Project is designed to provide a forum cross-cultural, digital communication and collaborative project development with colleagues in Atlanta, USA. This forum for experiential learning demands a high level of person-to-person communication and interaction that centers on the challenges of real-life contextual communication.

The course will focus on analysis of cross-cultural, digital communication. Both in subject area study and experientially, you will explore issues in this area, analyze them, and report the results of your research, experience, and analysis.

The overall textual goal of your class project is to provide an effective, clear, well-designed web site that provides the results of your research and experiences. The other class assignments will serve as your introduction of qualifications (resume), plans of action (proposals), and reports of your site needs assessments (digital project report).
Much of this class will be virtual in nature, conducted both on the World Wide Web through WebBoard conferencing software and through e-mail, that will allow you to work with your classmates in America at the Georgia Institute of Technology. As such, you must plan to devote time to your online discussions, just as you would to sessions in more traditional face-to-face class environments.

Description of Assignments

Readings/Participation Students are responsible for all course readings on the day assigned.
Resumes Students will create effective, clear, resumes as a means to introduce themselves to their American colleagues. They should refer to our class discussions and the Icarus site at http://icarus.lcc.gatech.edu to prepare their assignment. Each individual will prepare his/her own resume.
Proposals Students will submit collaborative hard copy proposals to pursue their plans for working within a collaborative team of Russian and American students to compare and analyze issues regarding representation of news on Russian and American websites. By necessity, students will also consider issues in cross-cultural, digital communication.
Students will describe their plans for developing their digital artifact representing their findings. They will begin by describing the need for the artifact, then indicate how the proposed product will satisfy that need. Next, they will describe in detail, the product that they intend to produce, then assure their readers that the plan for production is feasible. They will conclude with a summary of all these points to persuade readers that they will be able to complete the digital artifact within the constraints of available equipment, skills, and time.
The proposal must explain and describe each student's individual duties as part of the collaborative team, then must also explain each student's duties involved in integrating the team's work with that of other collaborative members. Students should use memo format for this document.
Analytical Artifacts Students will produce final digital projects that reflect and apply what they've learned through the semester about the requirements for effective cross-cultural, digital communication. Students will produce digital artifacts as examples of how to convey information effectively, whether visual, aural, or textual, to both Russian and American users. Explanatory documentation must accompany your digital artifact.
