Archives Training Centre

The Archives Training Centre (ATC) was set up to provide advanced learning for specialists working in archives or manuscript departments of libraries, museums, and various academic institutions. The purpose of training and updating professional archivists is to make them well versed in up-to-date archive-keping methodology and relevant disciplines.

Inauguration of  the Archives Training Centre 1November 1999The most important subjects on the curriculum are information technologies in archive-keeping, legal aspects of archive administration, Russian and international standards for access to information, acquisition and formation of archives, study of potential sources of acquisition, historiography and source criticism in the 20th century.

With a view to incorporating the positive Russian experience into international experience, the ATC involves, in the teaching process, recognized experts from the International Council of Archives, Federal Archives Service of Russia, Moscow Historical Archive Institute, National Research Institute for Document and Archive Administration, Central European University in Budapest, the St Petersburg Branch of the Institute of Russian History in the Russian Academy of Sciences, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, etc.

Training is organized in a form of two-week seminars designed for leading specialists and top archive administrators from the Russian Northwest, as well as archives in St Petersburg, the Baltic and East European countries. Other forms of updating include professional meetings, conferences, debates, and round tables to discuss matters of great importance in archive management.
